This past Thursday (on my 32nd birthday!), Michael and I had the pleasure of attending Crystal by Cirque du Soleil. I’ll confess, we had actually never seen a Cirque du Soleil show prior to Crystal, but OMG was it amazing! I’m pretty sure my mouth was wide open in awe for half the show.
I’ve always been a fan of figure skating. As a little girl, I would count the days to the Winter Olympics. So when I heard they were putting Cirque du Soleil on ice, I knew I had to see it. Luckily, the show was in Phoenix for my birthday weekend (and is still here through Sunday).
After some apps and cocktails at Blue Hound Kitchen & Cocktails (more on that later), Michael and I headed over to Talking Stick Resort Arena to take our seats for Crystal. Like most people, I had a general idea of the phenomenal acrobatics I was about to see, but I was honestly still so surprised throughout the show.
The story is based around Crystal, the show’s main character, who sets out on an exhilarating quest to fulfill her destiny as she dives into a world of her own imagination. She soars through this surreal world at high speed to become what she was always destined to be: confident, freed, empowered. Did I mention my birthday is also International Women’s Day? What a great story for the day!
Synchronized skating, freestyle, figure and extreme skating are featured alongside circus disciplines such as swinging trapeze, aerial straps and hand to hand. The result is an adrenaline-packed show that pushes the boundaries and surpassed all my expectations.
There were funny moments, emotional moments, and of course, unreal moments of acrobatics like I’ve never seen before. Literally, we laughed, we cried, we were just generally amazed… I highly recommend catching Crystal this weekend if you’re a fellow Phoenician like me, or when it comes to your city.
You can learn more and buy tickets to Crystal at the Cirque du Soleil website.
And for the record: the photos featured in this post aren’t even my favorite moments of the show — you’ll have the attend to see those :)
Disclosure: I was offered free tickets to Crystal for this review. All opinions are my own.
