Michael and I have two rescued pit bulls, Shelby and Link. And while they’re both surprisingly lazy for their breed, we still try to get some good exercise in to keep them in shape while also getting a little workout ourselves.
Here are 6 great ways to work out with fido in tow:
1. Jogging, Running or Walking
Perhaps the most obvious of the options, but a great workout nonetheless! I highly recommend using a gentle leader like you see on Shelby above if your dog gives you any trouble on-leash. A backpack is a great option as well, and she can carry your things ;)
For a more advanced walk, try a dog-friendly hike! Just be sure the hike is approved for dogs, as some can be a bit too challenging for our four-legged friends.
3. Roller Blading/Skating
Cruise around town with your dog pulling. For this workout, use a harness instead of a leash, and be sure to get your furbaby comfortable with the skates before you head out. Also make sure she’s physically fit enough to handle pulling your weight on skates.
Cycling with your dog is only for the most well-behaved of walkers, but if you’re dog is able, this can be a great workout. Be sure your dog can follow commands like “sit,” “slow,” “left,” and “right,” to ensure she can keep on track with your bike. You’ll also want to invest in a special bicycle leash.
If your furry friend is a water lover, swimming can be a great way to work out together! Swim laps together, or play fetch. Just be sure your dog is comfortable in the water and can swim well.
We’ve all heard of yoga, but have you heard of doga? Doga is just what you think: yoga with your dog, and it’s said to be great bonding time! Depending on the city you live in, you may be able to find some classes locally. If not, Animal Planet also has some doga training videos available.
