Summer can be pretty brutal in the Phoenix area, but there are some benefits too. One of those benefits is discounted staycations at the Valley’s best resorts. Michael and I (along with our pups, Shelby and Link) took advantage of one a couple weekends ago at Kimpton’s Hotel Palomar at CityScape in Downtown Phoenix.
Although Michael and I only live 20 minutes from downtown, I’m sad to say that we rarely spend time there. It’s easy to get stuck in our East Valley bubble I suppose. So a staycation in Downtown Phoenix was such a treat, and the Hotel Palomar was the perfect location to center the trip around.
We arrived Saturday afternoon with our dogs in tow and were quickly checked in and brought up to our corner suite. Talk about gorgeous! I tend to lean toward modern hotels, and the Hotel Palomar did not disappoint. For the dogs, guest services sent up some food/water bowls, as well as little beds — but let’s be honest, Shelby and Link slept with us in ours ;) Either way, really nice touch! Many hotels say they’re dog friendly when they really just accept dogs. Kimpton Hotels are truly dog friendly. Bringing our pups was super easy, and the hotel staff was really welcoming to them. They’re also allowed all around the resort, aside from the restaurants, so they enjoyed the tour of the property as much as we did.
After a quick walk and a little freshening up, we headed down to the nightly wine hour and enjoyed some delicious flatbread, too many glasses of complimentary wine and great conversation with some new friends, fellow Phoenicians doing a staycation.
After another quick walk for the dogs, it was time for dinner at Blue Hound Kitchen and Cocktails. As I think you know by now, Michael is a private chef, so the food is always the highlight of any trip for him. When we arrived at Blue Hound, we were quickly seated at a cute two-top with a view of CityScape. Our server explained how we could either order off the menu or do a chef’s choice small plate selection. Without hesitation, we both agreed on the latter. I’m pretty convinced you can never go wrong that way. I also took our server’s suggestion on a drink, the Air Mail, which was really tasty and included Aviation Gin, lemon, orgeat, egg white and peach bitters mist. Michael got the Lawless, which is a mix of Four Roses Bourbon, “truck stop” bitters, wormwood liqueur and tobacco smoke. Seriously!
The food was all AMAZING. Like some of the best we’ve ever had. Our first course included deviled eggs (one of my favorite foods ever) and seared tuna. Presentation and taste were both very on point. Next up: fried green tomatoes with spicy remoulade and jumbo lump crab. High-end comfort food? Count us in! Then we had a beet salad with Boursin, clementine, fennel, pickled shallots and garden vinaigrette, and I was pretty convinced they were reading our minds. The food selections could not have been more perfect for our tastes.
The main course consisted of a fall-off-the-bone pork shank with stewed white beans, braised greens, fennel sausage and fried onions, as well as shrimp and grits with andouille sausage, tomatoes and green onions. At this point we were seriously stuffed, so we took the leftovers from the main and our dessert — apple pie with salted caramel ice cream — to go. Have a mentioned how amazing each and every course was?!
After dinner, the dogs needed another walk, and we needed to walk off all the food we just ate. We wandered around downtown for a bit, enjoying the “cooler” evening weather before heading back to the hotel to drop off the pups and grab a drink a LUSTRE, the Hotel Palomar’s rooftop pool lounge.
From there, we headed right across the street to one of our favorite cocktail bars, Bitter & Twisted. We grabbed a seat at the bar and made our way through the massive cocktail menu, trying a few different things or simply asking the bartender to make us something we might like. We grabbed a little popcorn and struck up a conversation with the couple seated next to us. Originally from the UK, they recently moved to Phoenix from Shanghai, and conversation with them was easy all night. That’s what I love about Phoenix — it’s always easy to make new friends while we’re out and about!
We closed down the bar at 2am and headed back to our suite to grab the dogs for another quick walk before all passing out in our comfortable bed.
In the morning, we grabbed some complimentary iced coffee at the hotel, skipped breakfast, but had a great lunch at LUSTRE before checking out and heading back to our home 20 minutes down the road in Chandler.
Overall, our staycation at the Hotel Palomar was a great experience and one that felt like a true vacation! Thanks to the entire hotel staff for the hospitality. We will most certainly be back!
