Over the course of the past couple years, you may have seen the photo above floating around Facebook and the general internet. That’s Michael and I at our wedding almost five years ago :) What a weird experience to have your own wedding photo go viral! But on week of our fifth wedding anniversary, I’ve decided it’s time to set the record straight about that photo, because whoever started the virality of that photo had the story all wrong.
While it’s been labeled as the “first fight box,” I can’t help but feel like any couple taking that route would open the thing on the first week of marriage. Am I right?
Here’s what it really is: This is the wine and love letter box. On you eve of your wedding, write love letters to each other, then seal the letters, a bottle of wine and two glasses in the box by nailing it shut during your ceremony. You will plan to open the box at your 10th wedding anniversary, unless there comes a time during your marriage where you both feel like calling it quits. Before you make any rash decisions, open the box, enjoy the wine, and read the letters to remember why you fell in love in the first place.
Feel free to share the image above to help me set the story straight (and give credit to my wonderful photographer).
In five more years when Michael and I open our box, we’re planning to write new letters and re-seal it with a new bottle of wine…which will likely be much tastier than the cheap wine our early-20’s selves nailed in there the first time around ;)
PS: I really DO know how to hold a hammer in real life…
