Before Michael and I moved to Arizona, I never realized how nice it would be to live within such close proximity to Mexico. A little over three hours in the car + one border crossing later, and voila, we’re in sunny Puerto Peñasco, Mexico!
Also know as Rocky Point, Puerto Peñasco is a sleepy little beach town located on the Sea of Cortez. It’s often referred to as “Arizona’s beach,” and driving there one time will show you why — I’m pretty sure I see more Arizona plates than Sonora plates there!
It’s not a major tourist destination like many other Mexico cities, but I personally love how low-key it is. Two years in a row, we’ve rented a home in Las Conchas, a beach-front community just a few minutes from the Fish Market (the downtown area of Rocky Point). Las Conchas is a little quieter than the more popular Sandy Beach, which is home to Puerto Peñasco’s resorts. Overall though, everything is in pretty close proximity by car.
When it comes to vacationing in Rocky Point, my two favorite things are: the beach (of course) and heading down to the Fish Market for some delicious food…or a booze cruise! We took a sunset cruise with Eco Fun Rentals, and I couldn’t recommend it enough. I also had the most delicious shrimp tacos of my life at the BooBar (another favorite). I’m still dreaming about those tacos…
Overall, I’m a big fan of the Rocky Point roadtrip and definitely recommend it if you’re located in Arizona or surrounding states. Word on the street is that there’s going to be a cruise ship port opening there next year, so we’ll see how the little beach town continues to grow and develop.
Have you ever roadtripped to Mexico from the States?
