This past weekend, two of my girlfriends and I left two husbands, one boyfriend and even a baby at home for a little weekend road trip to Las Vegas. It was a fun weekend of going out, gambling, shopping (for matching Alex and Ani bracelets of course) and simply enjoying each other’s company. It was a truly fulfilling weekend away. Honestly, after over six years of marriage, this was my first girls’ weekend, and I have no idea what took me so long!
If you’re in that same boat, here are five reasons you should plan your own girls’ weekend ASAP:
1. You’ll feel more connected to your best gals.
Let’s face it: life gets busy. Sure, we try to make time for brunches and fitness classes, but sometimes we go weeks or even months without seeing each other, even when we live in the same city. And it’s even worse when we’re in long-distance friendships! Planning a girls’ weekend is a great opportunity to get away together without distractions, have fun and just be friends. It’s the perfect opportunity to strengthen your bond with your besties.
2. Sometimes you just need a little girl talk.
Am I right? A girls’ weekend is the best opportunity to let go of the filter and have that much-needed girl talk. No topic is too silly or too personal when you’re with your best girls, and sometimes you just need that. Sure, we talk to our families and significant others about a lot too, but there is no conversation platform that’s as open as the one that’s between girlfriends.
3. You deserve some time to relax.
As women, we do a ton. We may work. We may volunteer. We may have kids. We may have significant others. There’s a lot on our plates! You deserve some time away to relax, and what better way to do that than on a girls’ trip?! It doesn’t even have to be to some exotic location (although that’s nice too); it can be a short roadtrip away from home too.
4. Travel is good for the soul.
Ok, so this one applies to more than just ladies’ trips, but no matter how you slice it, travel is good for you. It reduces stress, stokes our curiosity and connects us to new places, cultures and experiences. That said, a lot of us don’t travel nearly enough. I find success booking multiple smaller vacations through the year to ensure this part of my life remains fulfilled, so adding a long ladies’ weekend is the perfect addition to my annual travel schedule.
5. It’ll strengthen your relationship(s) at home.
Every time I told a happily married relative or colleague about my upcoming girls’ weekend, they all shared similar reactions: that these types of trips and time apart from your significant other actually strengthens that relationship long-term. So while you may miss your beau a little while you’re away, you can rejoice in knowing that you’re actually doing something good for your relationship. Plus, he can plan a guys’ weekend as well — that’s what our husbands are doing in a couple months!
