As Michael and I get ready to redecorate our bedroom, I’ve been immersing myself in the world of home decor trends. Here are a few of my favorites…
1. Bold Accent Walls
Some bold colors can be a little much if they’re used throughout a room, but an accent wall gives you the opportunity to pair a bold color with more neutral ones in a way that really provides some interest in a room.
The key is in determining which wall gets the special treatment. This can be something inherent in a room like a fireplace or large window, or it can be created through other decor — think a special piece of furniture or interesting wall decor.
2. Textured Wallpaper
Wallpaper is definitely coming back in a big way, and this isn’t your ugly 90’s floral pattern wallpaper. Today’s wallpaper trends include bold patterns and lots of great texture.
Whether you’re looking for something a little simple like grasscloth (as shown above) or are ready to make a bold statement with paintable textured paper, there are tons of trendy options to suit your needs. Like bold paint colors, these sometimes work best for accent walls, just depending on the room and the paper.
3. Unique Lighting
A unique light fixture can add an interesting focal point to pretty much any room in your home. Bedrooms and dining rooms are the places we see these most, but they really can brighten up any area that needs a little pop.
These items tend to be a little costly, so don’t go overboard if you’re on a budget, but find one or two unique pieces that help to carry your overall decor vision through.
4. Pops of Color
Looking to add a little color to a room without a lot of work? Consider the room’s accessories! Little pops of color work well for accent pillows, small furniture pieces, rugs, artwork and misc. other decor items.
Finding items in bright, bold colors brings life to a room without requiring a ton of heavy lifting.
5. Modern Retro
Retro-inspired furniture and decor has made a huge comeback in the past year or so, in a very chic way.
Like most decor trends, less is more when it comes to modern retro. The key here is to select certain mid-century-inspired elements without going overboard. Pair interesting items with a general contemporary look to get this modern retro decor in your home.
6. Raw Wood
Talk about eye-catching! Raw wood works perfectly in key living areas like dining rooms and living rooms and really creates a one-of-a-kind look in almost any space.
Whether you’re choosing a statement piece like a reclaimed dining room table or even considering raw wood counters, this trend is all about bringing the outside in and creating some real interest in your space.
7. Layered Patterns
There are so many great home decor patterns available now, so if you can’t choose just one, consider layering a few! Pretty much any textile in a room — from the furniture to the curtains to the accent pillows — can be layered, so get creative.
Just know that mixing patterns can sometimes be harder than it looks, so be sure to give yourself some time for experimentation to get just the right look. And don’t just layer patterns, mix up the colors as well!
