I turned 30 this year, and for the past year, I’ve begun to notice my skin changing…the dreaded aging! Luckily, I had a little foresight into this (good things can’t last forever, right?) so I’ve worked over the past few years to update my skincare routine to match my age. While I once used minimal product and often went to bed with a full face of makeup, I’ve now honed my routine to keep my skin as fresh as possible. Here are my five skincare commandments…
1. Thou Shall Not Fall Asleep with Makeup On
I once heard that every night you fall asleep with makeup on ages your skin by one day. I’m not sure how true that is, but there are a ton of articles that will tell you just how bad it is to fall asleep with a full face on. Between breaking down healthy collagen to cause fine lines and premature aging, and clogging your pores to result in the development of acne, it’s easy to see why washing your face before bed is one of the most important things you can do before you hit the hay. After all, that beautiful face of yours needs to rest too!
Bonus: It’s also really important to wash your makeup brushes so you’re not putting bacteria on your face everyday. I’d suggest aiming to wash them once per week.
2. Thou Shall Use Proper Products
When we’re younger, we can easily get away with simple cleanser and moisturizer. Our skin doesn’t typically need much to be flawless. However, as we age, we also require a lot more product to keep our skin in line. Today, I use a variety of products: face wash, toner, moisturizer, eye cream, a topical wrinkle filler and an anti-aging makeup base. It may seem like a lot, but it’s important to me to invest in youthful skin as I get older. Products I love include FullFill by Dermarché Labs and Le Metier de Beaute’s Peau Vierge; I wear both everyday. And while they’re a little pricey, the bottles last forever and really work!
3. Thou Shall Wear Sunscreen
In addition to using great facial products, I can’t stress enough how important sunscreen is…but you know that already, right? I used to be terrible to my skin when it came to this, rarely wearing sunblock and often going to the tanning bed, but I’ve really grown up when it comes to protecting my skin from the sun’s harmful rays. In addition to causing wrinkles and prematurely aging skin, not wearing sunscreen can also cause cancer! So just wear it. For me, both my moisturizer and my anti-aging makeup base have SPF in them to ensure my face is covered all day, everyday, but I also always apply spray-on sunscreen anytime I’m going to be outside for an extended period.
4. Thou Shall Hydrate
Wearing moisturizer on our faces is just the first step; it’s essential to keep hydrated during the day by drinking water as well! While water may not go straight to our faces, the skin is the body’s largest organ, so you know it helps. Keeping the body hydrated with the suggested eight glasses per day is a great way to keep your overall body hydrated and toxins flushed — which of course has an impact on that beautiful face of yours.
5. Thou Shall Sleep
They don’t call it beauty rest for nothing! Getting the proper 7-9 hours per night means less wrinkles, a more glowing complexion and brighter, less puffy eyes. According to WebMD, your body repairs itself and recovers while you snooze, and that leads to a long list of benefits for your looks. So be sure to catch the right amount of Z’s every night. Your face will thank you!
